LETTER TO THE EDITOR WHICH THE NEW YORK TIMES NEVER PRINTED

Subject: BOB FRANKS FOR SENATE
Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 09:57:07 -0400

To the Editor:

Hey, New Jerseyans! (editorial Oct 25) The New York Times editorial page wants you to vote for Bob Franks because although “he has made some disturbing compromises”---such as he’s “too soft on
background checks at gun shows, has supported several measures that would limit full freedom of choice, marred [his good mass transit and environmental record] with recent votes that favored developers, voted for
excessive Republican budget cuts in 1995, [has] been less clear on his views on peacekeeping missions overseas and ratification of the nuclear test ban treaty,” he is a moderate Republican.

Does the New York Times editorial page know the meaning of the word, “oxymoron?” The term, “moderate Republican,” is an oxymoron. In other words, there is no such thing. Republicans in Congress vote in lockstep
with the Republican congressional leadership, which has proved itself a prisoner of the Christian Far Right. Just as Bob Franks proved himself to be when he voted for President Clinton’s impeachment, something the
Times editorial page neglected to mention.

Instead, the Times editorial page condemned Jon Corzine, Bob Franks’ rival for the New Jersey Senate seat, for having the wallet and the temerity to outspend the legendary overstuffed Republican campaign war chest. Lamenting Jon Corzine’s “flagrant use of his personal wealth,” the Times editorial page concludes:

“If political philosophy were the only consideration, we would be for Mr. Corzine,”
