"I came to the conclusion that all the values that made me admire the American people were being eroded by the covert operations of the CIA and kindred secret bodies... Time after time the United States has generously aided other countries threatened by famine or disaster. The survival of this great tradition is of importance, not
only to Americans, but also to all freedom loving people in the world. But in my view, the survival of this great is now being gravely threatened by the covert criminal actions of the Central Intelligence Agency and its associated services. If the United States is to be protected from this grave danger, it is essential that the activities of this secret agency should be fully exposed to the people of the United States. ...I am a fierce believer in the democratic system of governments. Among the democracies, the constitution of the United
States can be, and has proved to be, a bastion of civil liberty. However, democracy and the rule of law could not survive side by side with a state agency that engages in covert operations ranging from assassinations to levying mercenary armies. Even if there is, now, an attempt being made by some to check the activities of the CIA and the other United States intelligence agencies, the whole concept of a secret government and army within a government is a menace to the democratic system." --(Sean MacBride, former Foreign Minister of Ireland, and 1974 Nobel Peace Prize recipient; died 1988)

------------------------------

"This is not a military defense of Iraq against an invading army. This is the creation of another layer in this mythology of victimhood, which has been developed in the Arab world for at least the last three generations. ... The view is that everything evil comes from outside, from somewhere else." --(Gwyn Prins in an interview March/April 2003)

I'm glad to see you're back in business & there's something new from you in my box.

Poet & translator Anselm Hollo sends this from Boulder... by Tom Raworth, who I suspect will not be voting for Tony Blair.

LISTEN UP

Why should we listen to Hans Blix
and all those other foreign pricks:
the faggot French who swallow snails
and kiss the cheeks of other males:
the Germans with their Nazi past
and leather pants and cars that last
longer than ours: the ungrateful Chinks
we let make all our clothes; those finks
should back us in whatever task ---
we shouldn't even have to ask:
and as for creepy munchkin Putin...
a slimy asshole---no disputing!"
We saved those Russians from the reds---
they owe support. Those wimpish heads
of tiny states without the power
to have a radio in the shower
should fall in line behind George Bush
and join with him and Blair to push
the sword of truth through Saddam's guts
(no need for any ifs or buts)
we'll even do it without the backing
of UN cowards and their quacking---
remember how we thrashed the Nips
and fried them like potato chips?
God's on our side, he's white and Yankee
he'd drop the bombs, he'd drive a tank: we
know he's stronger than their Allah
as is our righteousness and valor!
We'll clip Mohammed's ears and pecker
And then move on to napalm Mecca.

Hi,

I just bookmarked the site. Have a feeling that I'll be spending a lot of time on it. I also like the bold black on white, the spacing between lines, which makes it very easy to read, unlike many other on-line publications.

You might want to check out an on-line anthology that I co-founded with Andrew Gettler & edited from 1995--2000, the first poetry anthology available on the Net. http://www.echonyc.com/~poets

Nos. 6 & 7 (1997/98 is the Vietnam Veterans Poets issue for which I  received two grants and very good reviews. My partner, Andrew, was a  Nam vet. He died end of last year & shortly I'll have a site up for him
(Andrew Gettler) that will include a lot of his poems from his book, Footsteps of a Ghost, poems of Vietnam.
Andrew was a great fan Of Micheline's, as I later became, after he introduced me to his work. I spent an incredible day with Jack in 1996 when I went to S.F. to give some readings.

Anyway, a lot to read, which I'm looking forward to doing.

Peace,

Linda Lerner

Saw this in Liz Smith's column.............

Give yourself a treat and read Michael Kinsley on George W. Bush, described as "a real leader" in Time magazine this week, issue dated April 21.

The piece, titled "The Power of One" says in part: "The president's ability to decide when and where to use America's military power is now absolute. Congress cannot stop him. That's not what the Constitution says, and it's not what the War Powers Act says, but that's how it works in practice. The U.N. cannot stop him. That's not what the U.N. Charter says, but who cares? And who cares what America's allies think either? Even more amazing than the president's pragmatic power over military resources is his apparent spiritual power over so many minds." Just read it!  ##

Dear sir, i am a student doing a report on world conflict. in my research, i came across your website.
/column72g.html . what i read made me absolutely sick. the people who died in those killing feilds and torture chambers deserve respect and their dignity. as an adult you should be able to understand this. is your website some sort of sick joke? why in the name of God would you even want to see pictures of the victims of agent orange? i pray that you will have a change of heart on this matter. that you will see that the world is not a joke and neither were the killing feilds.
sincerely, a concerned student  ##

Just let Bush come to the U.K. if he dare and we will hang his bollocks on the nearest tree and stick the Stars and Stripes up his arse, in other words we'll get the Fucker. All the best Tom.
