PETER COYOTE RECOMMENDS TWO BOOKS

Subject: TWO BOOKS
Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2002 01:20:59 -0700
From: "Peter Coyote" <wdprod@earthlink.net>
Organization: Wild Dog Productions
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com

I'm in Europe working and can't really keep up, but I want to suggest two (small ) but extremely interesting and provocative books.

The first is called, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, by Greg Palast, an American who writes for the London Guardian and Observer. It consists of two parts: the corroborating data to demonstrate how the State of Florida (Jeb Bush/Katharine Harris) illegally removed 57,000 voters (mostly black and democratic) from the Florida rolls by hiring a company to search for felons and giving them strict instructions not to set the match criteria to anything more rigorous than "close" matches, despite assurances from the company that there would be many errors made by doing so. Consequently "Fred Jones", a legal voter, was thrown off because his name matched a felon named "F. Jones" somewhere else.

The second half of the book, consists of quotes from and analysis of IMF documents 'liberated' by disgruntled employees and explains precisely the 114 steps that impoverished countries are required to undertake to get loans from the World Bank and IMF. It explains precisely how ministers are bribed to sell off national assets to our corporations, and then privatize public services; fire 30-40% of their labor force, and on and on, even including the costs of suppressing the completely anticipated riots. To see clearly what is being done in our names, under the capitalism-without-limits of the "Chicago Boys"---Milton Friedman, Alan Greenspan, et al, is a serious tonic against complacency, and makes it critically clear how our wealth is based on the suffering of others. It goes a long way towards understanding the apparently "insoluble" messes of Latin America and Africa.

The second book is called Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace---Why we are so hated and it is by Gore Vidal. It chronicles, by name and date, the hundreds of military sorties and campaigns the United States has initiated since World War II, in the name of peace. It goes on to explain, simply and cogently, the ways in which the Bush/Rumsfeld/Cheney junta is expanding government power and trammeling the constitution under the rubric of fighting terrorism.

It concludes, with a series of articles, including correspondence with Timothy McVeigh, and by quoting named sources---General Patin, another man who invented the neutron bomb---builds the case that the Oklahoma City bombing could not have been carried out by McVeigh's bomb. States (according to Pentagon sources) that there were 5 bombs in the building; that furthermore NO ATF AGENTS WENT TO WORK THAT DAY; and that at best McVeigh was a patsy like Ruby, who took the credit for reasons he articulates clearly in his correspondence to Vidal. Vidal suggests that the real reason for the explosion was the passage of the pending anti-terrorist legislation and then goes on to cite any number of other instances where similar things have happened in the past. It is fascinating reading, and a clear warning as to the intentions of "the Bushites" as Vidal refers to them, in regards to our civil liberties.

Good Reading.

FIRMER LIFTED DERRIERES, ANYONE?

Subject: Hot Pants?

Ya Know?I don't mind the junk catalogs so much anymore. It's perversely Patriotic feeling relief that most of the products are foreign. Although the Lace curtains in today's Catalog would look charming in a funeral parlor in Maine. And the chrome Shoes could be exciting on the one in the casket. I’d even try to understand the lawn pinwheel with blades of American Flags as idiotically current. But if I was the editor I wouldn't put the {LOVELY LIFT} “Pre-shaped Panty for a shapely firmer lifted derriere", next to the Bake A Donut machine Ad. {At least not in the Summer}.  ##

GUTHRIE SAYS THANKS

Al - I am so pleased by your presentation of my work - thanks again for including me in this fashion. I love and respect the way you added a 'Hammond says' to my bio sentence vs. a blanket endorsement here. Astute and cautious as you should be at this virtual distance.  One of the many things I learned from "Hube the Cube" was a sense of 'Beat Protocol,' where it really is best to have one's 'bona fides' in order before (perhaps even tenaciously) stepping into someone else's sphere of life endeavor. I truly enjoy, learn from, and greatly appreciate your gestures of encouragement.

Please write whenever time allows.

AsEver,

Hammond ##

Al

You may be interested in this new book as it relates to early 40s, 50s, and 60s radio, and it has a pretty hip interview with the late jazz DJ, Felix Grant.

"Johnny Holliday: From Rock to Jock" comes out in Sept.

Thanks for your consideration. Hope all is well.

ANOTHER E FROM DANNY BASALONE

Al,

Thank you for your reply.

I realize now that I didn't read "David Bowie and Tattler Bob" on line, but from a copy a mutual friend had given me about 10 years ago along with "Bird's Christmas".

My name is Danny Basalone. Along with my family, I moved from Roselle Park NJ to Berkeley Heights in 1953 when I was 6 years old. My family moved into a new ranch style house on Park Avenue, surrounded by other Italian-Americans on their way to a better life.... As my Newark relatives called it then, "the sticks".

I went to grammar school with Mike Rosa and high school with Thom Lynch, his younger sister and brother, Patty and Kenny and Charlie Larkey from Mountainside, names I'm sure you recognize. We all hung out together at the Dairy Queen. Mike and Charley introduced me to Rick Phillips, Dave Palmer and Danny Mancellino. "The King Bees". We were all crazy for "The Stones" and naturally that led me to Muddy Waters et al.

I was completely wrapped up in the then current "scene" and that and the music has and continues to greatly impact my life. I loved hanging out in "the Village" visiting my sister on West 4th Street what could be a hipper address after Dylan immortalized it?) going to Folk City, The Dugout and Cafe Au GoGo.

Afterwards I married Thom’s sister Patty and we've been together 32 years living happily in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

So we have some shared experiences.

From: EarWrap@aol.com
To: info@blacklistedjournalist.com

You Think A Gallon Of Gas Is Expensive? This makes one think, and puts things in perspective.

Diet Snapple 16 oz. $1.29 -- $10.32 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz. $1.19 -- $ 9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20 oz. $1.59 -- $10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16 oz. $1.25 -- $10.00 per gallon
Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 -- $33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8.35 -- $178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 -- $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 -- $25.42 per gallon
Scope Mouthwash 1.5 oz $0.99 -- $84.48 per gallon
and this is the REAL KICKER......
Evian water 9 oz for $1.49 -- $21.19 per gallon. $21.19 a gallon    FOR WATER!... and the buyers don't even know the source.

So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, Whiteout, or Heaven forbid, PEPTO BISMOL or NYQUIL!!!!

Just a little humor to help ease the pain of your next trip to the pump.  ##
