Subject: Understanding Cancun

Last month, The Nation published "Behind Globalization's Glitz" by Marc Cooper
http://www.thenation.com/doc.mhtml%3Fi=20030922&s=cooper , that I perceived as an unfair and distorted attack on our community.
I felt that The Nation owed us a full story at least as long as Cooper's in which to rebut his accusations. After a heated exchange of correspondence with Vic Navasky, the publisher, I settled for writing a 300-word letter to the editor that included a link to a fuller treatment on my web page. Cooper's brief reply to my letter was even
more insulting than his original article.
I wrote another letter to Cooper about this and put it on my website, along with a scan of my letter and his response that appear in the current issue of The Nation but not on http://www.thenation.com . My replies to Marc now contain very significant information about Cancun as a functioning social entity. As far as I can tell, none of this is available elsewhere on the web. Non-travel stories about Cancun are uniformly hostile and,
to me, hopelessly misguided.
I feel very strongly that Cancun is an important key to understanding Mexico today. It represents the aspirations of Mexico's very dynamic middle class, largely ignored in current social analysis, which seems to
concentrate on campesinos and urban slums to the exclusion of all other considerations.
You can read my replies to Marc at http://www.cafecancun.com and http://www.cafecancun.com/marc.html .
